Dutch artist born in Scheveningen, Netherlands in 1948. In 1990, he began building large mechanisms out of PVC that are able to move on their own, which he named it "Strandbeest". The kinetic sculptures appear to walk by themselves either by natural wind or by the "air stomach" which are collective of plastic bottles with compressed air in it. Theo has designed and constructed his strandbeests, allowing them to evolve into new forms, better suited for survival on the beach. His animated works are intended to be a fusion of art and engineering. He strives to equip his strandbeest with their own artificial intelligence so they could avoid obstacles such as the sea, by changing course when they detect water. He now works at his laboratory in the Dutch countryside to create the beasts before releasing them to roam freely in herds on the Dutch coastline
